As the first person to ever be pregnant while serving on the Alameda City Council, Malia led the effort to bring lactation and diaper changing stations to city buildings.

Voted to raise the minimum wage.

Fought for lead testing in young children throughout Alameda County and to require the FDA change baby food requirements to completely ban any products that include any levels of lead or heavy metals as a member of the Alameda County Lead Abatement JPA

As a board member of Alameda Family Services, provided school-based health services to Alameda students and counseling services to youth and adults.

Canceled out-sourced contracts for fire inspections with private vendors and created the Fire Protection and Inspection Bureau, saving money and increasing accountability to avoid unsafe construction conditions like those that led to the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland.

100% pro-choice and supports everyone’s right to reproductive freedom.
